We were taking care of our 2.5 year old granddaughter, Ry, while her parents were out of town. She was eating breakfast when I asked her:
Me: What are you eating, big girl?
Me: Are you happy?
Me: Yeah; we’re happy over here, aren’t we?
Ry: Looking at Papa, she declared: We are happy over here, Papa!
Being happy is truly a state of mind; it’s something you decide to do, not something that happens to you. In any given moment you get to decide to be happy or not. It’s always your choice on how you want to feel.
So many times you think happiness depends on what someone else thinks or feels about a situation. When that happens, you have just given your personal power, your choice to another person. You let them decide how you are going to feel. You are no longer in control of your emotions. When you let someone else decide how you are going to feel, you are pleasing them. You have just put yourself on the back burner, making yourself feel small and unimportant.
Sure, I know; sometimes life hands you sour lemons. It happens to everybody. But it’s always how you react to any situation that either empowers or disempowers you. When a family member or friend is going through a particularly bad time, you are not helping them at all by seeing them sick and powerless. You feeling bad only brings more negative energy around them and yourself. I know that is not your intent, but that is what is truly happening.
What you can do to help them is to imagine them healthy and happy. See them in your mind’s eye how you want them to feel, not how they feel now. Surround them with positive, uplifting energy and love. Tell them you are sending love and happiness their way. Miracles can happen when you change your perspective and the way you feel about any situation.
Start the new year and new decade with a new perspective of looking at someone or something in a positive and uplifting way. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Being happy is always your choice; choose to be happy and see how your life changes along with those close to you. Be the change you want to see in others. When you say “Happy New Year” mean it! Emphasize the “Happy” and know you can truly make a difference in your life and the lives of others. Be happy.
Happy New Year,
