While traveling in the mountains a wise woman found a precious stone. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry. When the wise woman opened her bag to share her food, the hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. However, a few days later, he came back to return the stone to the wise woman and said, “I’ve been thinking. I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the hope you can give me something even more precious. I want what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone.” Author Unknown
If you had found a precious stone worth millions, could you give it to another person without hesitation? I’m pretty sure I would keep it and perhaps share some of the money with another. But to give it away knowing what it’s worth… I’m just not there yet.
What could the wise woman have within that would allow her to release the precious stone to a total stranger? I think one characteristic she must have is unconditional love for herself. She has learned that what is most precious in life has nothing to do with how much money you have, what car you drive or which designer jeans you wear. The most precious gems are what’s inside. You can tell how much unconditional love you have for yourself by how you treat yourselves and others, how loving and forgiving you are, how accepting you are of others who are different.
It’s my belief that the more we unconditionally love ourselves, the more love we have to share with others. Loving oneself is the greatest gift we can give ourselves because it’s what gives our lives meaning and purpose. It’s how we live the happiest life possible. It’s the reason we share precious gems with complete strangers.
With whom will you share your precious stone?
