In the fairytale The Princess and the Pea, by Hans Christian Andersen, the guest who claimed to be a princess had to sleep on top of a stack of mattresses. Under the bottom of the last mattress the queen had placed a single pea. The next morning the princess complained that she slept on something so hard she woke up black and blue. Because she could feel the pea under all the mattresses proved that she was a real princess.
As I was thinking about this story, it dawned on me that there could be another explanation for why the princess woke up feeling terrible. What if the pea represents the precious gem that lies within each of us while every mattress layer is a negative emotion, such as fear, shame, unworthiness, anger? In order to reach the precious gem of self-love that lies buried, first we have to release all the layers of false negative emotions and beliefs that we have believed are true.
Sometimes loving ourselves seems like a foreign concept, doesn’t it? I’ve spent a lifetime trying to figure out what my purpose is, where I’m going in life, how to live a life without regrets. And I’ve come to the conclusion that it all boils down to Self-Love, to loving all parts of ourselves. We get there by lots of forgiveness which allows us to release the negative emotions that stand between us and our true nature of love.
I feel that everyone is here to learn about self-love, which could be the greatest form of love we have access to. Learning to love ourselves unleashes a power within us that can lie dormant for years. A power we’ve always had but didn’t have access to because it laid beneath layers of unworthiness, fear, shame, self-judgment. This power is ready to explode outward and upward as we accept and love ourselves unconditionally. Which then allows us to love others the same way. I’m convinced that the whole key to happiness, to living a life of purpose, all comes down to this one precious gem that’s waiting for us at the bottom of the layers of mattresses. The princess woke up feeling terrible not because of the pea at the bottom but because of all the false negativity she believed about herself.
On the day where love is celebrated in many countries as St Valentine’s Day, give yourself the wonderful gift of self-acceptance, self-appreciation, self-love. And unleash the power within you that allows you to live a life of happiness, purpose and love.
