Many days before I get out of bed, I start thinking thoughts of appreciation. It sounds ridiculous but here’s the way I start:
I appreciate: my comfortable pillow, the clean sheets, the pretty quilt on our bed, having a really good A/C unit that keeps our house cool. (I live in the South so having an up and running air conditioner is a must!)
Continuing: I appreciate having carpet in the bedroom, a full-length mirror, the color of the walls, having my own vanity and sink.
You might ask, “What’s the purpose of this silly ritual?” For me the purpose is to start my day feeling good, to raise my energy and to give myself some love. Appreciating yourself is a very easy way to show love to yourself. It takes hardly any effort to start appreciating the ordinary items around you, the conditions you take for granted, the people in your life.
When I start my day with thoughts of appreciation, my day seems to run more smooth, I can handle challenges easier and I’m nicer to the people around me. Which is good for all concerned because I’m less likely to take my frustration out on the next person who ventures by me.
Having thoughts of appreciation is also good for your body. Science has proven that as soon as you think a thought it is communicated to all of your cells. It makes sense that uplifting thoughts help keep your cells operating in a healthy fashion while destructive thoughts start breaking down your cells little by little. I’m not saying it’s the cause of every illness or disease but I think it certainly contributes to it. In my opinion thinking thoughts of appreciation and love instead of hate, disgust, irritation, etc has got to have a positive impact on your body and your health.
If you are looking for ways to start your days more uplifted, begin with thoughts of appreciation. Look for ways to send love to yourself and others. As you do this, it will spill over into all avenues of your life, making your life a happier one.
